It is justifiable, I think, to see ‘The Shadow’ as the culmination of Andersen's art since the publication in 1835 of his first novel and his first collection of fairy tales. The pressures first from Andersen's experience of Britain in 1847 and then from the revolutions of 1848 and the continent-wide changes they brought about inevitably impacted on his creative works. These demand what they have not always received: appraisal in their own right, at once as part of their author's oeuvre and yet of a new order of achievement, the author's aims, both moral and aesthetic, having changed.
